Natalie Merchant - The House Carpenter's Daughter From the CD of the same name 2003 I think.. Just the music..Sometimes its all we need ;-) But here are the lyrics too... "well met, well met And I know true love Well met, well met", said he "I'm just returning from the salt, salt sea And it's all for the love of thee" "come in, come in My own true love And have a seat with me It's been three-fourths Of a long, long year Since together we have been" "no I can't come in And I can't sit down For I have but a moment's time They say that you're married To a house carpenter And your heart shall never be mine" "well I could have married The king's daughter fair She would have married me But I forsaked upon Her crowns of gold And it's all for the love of thee" "now will you forsake on Your house carpenter And go along with me? I'll take you where The grass grows green On the banks of the bitter reeds" She pick'd up her wee little babe And kisses, gave it three saying, "stay right here my darling little one Keep your papa company" Now they had not been On the ship two weeks I swear it was not three When his true love began To weep and moan And she wept most bitterly "are you weeping For my silver and gold Are you weeping for my store or are You weeping for that house carpenter That you ne'er shall see no more?" "a curse on the sailor she swore A curse, a curse she swore You robbed me of my sweet little babe That I never shall see no more!" Well, they had not been On the ship three ...

The House Carpenter
The House Carpenter
This is the third track on Harry Smith's Anthology of Folk Music. You can read more about The Anthology at oldweirdamerica.wordpress.com or you can see music from the blogger at http The version on the anthology was recorded by Clarence Ashley. This is one of the more popular tunes off of the Anthology and has been recorded by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Natalie Merchant, Doc Watson, Nickel Creek, Pentangle, and all sorts of other people. This version I play on the banjo, but the melody I think is closest to Nickel Creek or Doc Watson. The House Carpenter - Traditional Well met well met said an old true love Well met well met said he I've just returned from the salt salt sea And it's all for the love of thee Come in come in my own true love And have a seat by me It's been three fourths of a long long year Since together we have been I can't come in and I can't sit down For I haven't but a moments time They say your marries to a house carpenter And your heart will never be mine Well I could have married a kings daughter dear I'm sure she'd have married me But I've forsaken her crowns of gold All for the love of thee Will you forsake your house carpenter And go away with me I'll take you where the grass grows green On the banks of the deep blue sea Then she picked up her darling little babe And kisses she gave it three Saying stay right here my darling little babe And keep your pappa company They hadn't been on ship but about two weeks I'm sure it was not three Till this true ...

Natalie Merchant: "Tell yourself"
Natalie Merchant: "Tell yourself"

1139. House Carpenter (Child 243) - (Traditional English) - Live at Shaika
1139. House Carpenter (Child 243) - (Traditional English) - Live at Shaika
This song, one of the best-known of theEnglish and Scottish ballads collected by Francis James Child, is also also known as "James Harris" or "The Demon Lover." Around 1660 a variant of this ballad was titled "A Warning for Married Women, being an example of Mrs Jane Reynolds (a West-country woman), born near Plymouth, who, having plighted her troth to a Seaman, was afterwards married to a Carpenter, and at last carried away by a Spirit, the manner how shall presently be recited." The woman in the song is punished not so much for running away from her husband (and babies) but for breaking the vows she made to her former lover.. I first heard it sung by Joan Baez, but this is probably closer to Dylan's version. There is a fascinating book by Clinton Heylin - "Dylan's Daemon Lover" - which traces the various versions of this song back to it's origins in the sixteenth century. I used this source to put together what I thought were the most interesting and appropriate verses to tell the whole story. This video was recorded at Shaika in Montreal, Quebec. This song is on my second CD, "Laws of Chance". You can watch a playlist of my renditions of the Child ballads: www.youtube.com For lyrics and chords of my songs please see my website: www.raymondcrooke.com
